Part 10 - Drafting a Feature Flared Skirt

This video tutorial demonstrates how to adapt a basic skirt block to create a flared skirt with a high-low hemline. Izzy emphasises that the principles shown can be applied to create flared features at any point on a skirt, from a subtle fishtail to a dramatic mermaid style.

The tutorial begins with tracing the basic skirt block patterns (front and back). Izzy explains that the focus will be on adapting the bottom portion of the skirt to create the flare. She demonstrates how to mark the desired start point for the flare on both the front and back skirt pieces. For the high-low effect, she shows how to create an asymmetrical hemline, with the front hemline higher than the back.

The core technique demonstrated in this video is "slash and spread." Izzy explains how to divide the skirt pattern into panels and then spread these panels apart to introduce volume and flare. She provides specific measurements for the spread in this example but encourages viewers to experiment with different amounts to achieve varying degrees of flare. She also demonstrates how to create a smooth, curved hemline that blends seamlessly with the flared sections.

The video also covers adding seam allowances to the adapted pattern pieces, marking the grainline, and annotating the pattern with relevant information. Izzy stresses the importance of accurate markings for successful construction.

The tutorial touches on the sewing process, including sewing darts, joining the front and back skirt pieces, and hemming. However, it primarily focuses on the pattern drafting techniques for creating the flared skirt, with details on waistband construction and other finishing techniques to be covered in future videos.
