Part 68 - Bodice Openings - How to Draft a Zip Opening
In this video, Izzy demonstrates how to create a simple open-ended zip opening for a garment using a standard bodice block.
Izzy begins by explaining the importance of considering the width of the zip teeth when drafting the pattern. She measures her zip teeth, which are 6mm wide, and decides to remove 3mm from the centre front of the bodice.
The tutorial starts by marking and removing the 3mm from the center front. Izzy then temporarily moves the bust dart to the side seam to create a facing for the zip opening.
The video progresses with instructions on drawing a facing line on the front bodice and back bodice.
The tutorial progresses with instructions on creating pattern pieces for the front facing, front bodice, back bodice, and back facing, including adding seam allowances and annotations.
The tutorial progresses with instructions on sewing the darts, attaching the shoulder seams, sewing the facing pieces, attaching the zip to the bodice, attaching the facing to the bodice, sewing the side seams, and pressing the seams.
Izzy concludes by showcasing the finished zip-front bodice, highlighting its dramatic look and the simple pattern drafting involved. She encourages viewers to experiment with different zip widths and bodice shapes.
