The pattern:
We have selected two inclusively sized patterns for you to choose to sew. The ‘Dawn’ jeans are designed to suit a woman’s body and the ‘Quadra’ jeans are designed to suit a man’s body.
The ‘Dawn’ jeans (designed by Megan Nielsen Patterns) are a classic high waisted rigid jean pattern set. The pattern includes four cuts (tapered leg, straight leg, wide leg and shorts) and multiple lengths for tall, regular and cropped. The pattern features a high rise to sit on the natural waist, zip fly, close fit through the waist and hips and classic jeans details.
The ‘Quadra’ Jeans (designed by Thread Theory Patterns) provides a subtly modern take on the classic straight leg jean. This pair of jeans features a slight taper to the leg and extra room in the thigh to allow for lots of movement. They sit below the waist as a moderate low rise.
Sizing:
Click here for sizing and fabric requirements.
Dawn waist range: 61-132cm
Dawn hip range: 86-157cm
Quadra waist range: 66-127cm
Quadra hip range: 84-145cm
Note: if you would prefer to use a different jeans pattern, this can usually be accommodated. Please let us know if this is the case.
Fabric Type:
Sew either of these jeans in denim with no stretch or up to 2% elastane to add just that little bit of additional flexibility that so perfectly suits an active lifestyle. These patterns work best with fabric that is 9-13oz (305 – 406 GSM) weight.
In addition to your denim fabric you will also need 0.4m of cotton fabric for your pocket lining.
These patterns also work with twill or corduroy of a similar weight.
Sewing Level:
Learner / Competent Dressmaker. Please refer to our sewing level guide for more details.
What you will learn:
This workshop will take you through the process of making (and fitting) a pair of jeans from beginning to end. This is an intense three day masterclass, but a lot of fun. Here’s what we’ll teach you:
· How to measure your body correctly.
· How to choose a pattern size to cut and how to grade between sizes
· Topstitching details
· Buttonholes, jeans buttons, rivets.
· Sewing a zip fly.
· Common fitting issues and how to resolve them.
What to Bring:
You just need to bring the following:
· The required amount of denim fabric. We recommend bringing double the amount of required fabric incase any major alterations are required after the initial fit.
· 0.4m cotton for the pocket lining.
· Matching regular thread for the fabric colour
· Topstitching thread in a contrasting colour. We highly recommend Gutermann’s Denim thread.
· Plain thread to match the colour of the topstitching thread (this will be used in the bobbin)
· Hardware: 1 metal shank jeans button, 9 rivets.
· Metal tooth zipper for jeans.
We want you to feel comfortable while sewing so we encourage you to bring your own sewing machine. However, if you would prefer to use one of our sewing machines (Janome M100QDC) then please let us know on your booking form.
Class Details:
The masterclass will run from 09:30 – 16:30, with around 30 minutes for lunch.
Tea / coffee and biscuits will be provided each day, but you will need to bring your own lunch. Alternatively, there is the option purchase lunch from the superb cafe next door ‘Joni’. Please also let us know of any dietary requirements you may have.
