Part 6 - Drafting a Gathered Skirt
In episode six of her series on skirt block adaptations, Izzy demonstrates how to create a gathered skirt. Using a previously drafted, personally fitted skirt block as the foundation, she guides viewers through the process of adding fullness to the skirt.
The video focuses on adapting the skirt block pattern to accommodate the gathers. Izzy explains how to determine the amount of extra fabric needed for the gathered section, using a simple calculation based on the width of the skirt and a multiplier. She encourages experimentation with different multipliers to control the volume of the gathers. The pattern is then adjusted, with seam allowances added and the grainline marked.
Izzy also touches on the practical steps of creating the skirt. She reminds viewers to transfer key markings, sew darts, and prepare the gathered sections with basting stitches. The video briefly covers joining the gathered skirt bottom to the fitted top, as well as finishing the side seams and hem.
The episode concludes with Izzy showcasing the finished gathered skirt, highlighting the contrast between the fitted yoke and the voluminous gathers. She emphasises the design possibilities offered by this technique and encourages viewers to try different variations, playing with gather placement and fabric choices. She also promotes the Minerva community as a place to share finished projects and ask questions.
